Maggie Tang

Associate Johnson Winter Slattery

Maggie Tang is a newly-admitted Australian lawyer who recently completed her New Colombo Plan Scholarship and Fellowship under the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in early 2024. Throughout 2022-2024, she worked in various NGOs across Australia, South Korea and Singapore, with a focus on helping asylum seeker, refugee and migrant populations. Maggie’s interest in this space was driven by an early role in the Australian Commonwealth Ombudsman where her team had oversight over the treatment of asylum seekers held in detention in Australia and related centres in Nauru and Manus Island of Papua New Guinea. Having become privy to the injustices and adversities that many of these people faced, she has since become a passionate advocate for their rights. She currently works at a commercial law firm in Australia where she will soon be seconded to the Justice and Equity Centre in their strategic litigation practice where she will assist on the Asylum Seeker Health Rights Project. From working in providing pro bono legal services to asylum seekers, documenting the human rights experiences of North Korean refugees and currently, working as a caseworker in a women’s shelter for foreign domestic workers, she believes her work has only just begun.
