Bio: Annette Bain is Pro Bono Counsel – Asia at international law firm DLA Piper. Based in Hong Kong, Annette is responsible for the firm’s pro bono practice in Bangkok, Beijing, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo. In this role, Annette draws on her profound knowledge of pro bono practice and the issues which prevent people accessing justice. Her work has included pro bono collaboration and innovation across the justice sector involving law firms, the corporate sector, government, NGOs and the community in Australia and Asia. In particular she has focused on ending violence against women and children; ending homelessness locally and globally and strengthening rule of law. Current projects include the establishment of a legal clinic in Hong Kong with local NGO RainLily to assist women victims of violence obtain compensation; building pro bono culture through initiatives such as the Pro Bono Roundtable movement in Asia; and collaborating on the recently launched report: This Way: Finding Community Legal Assistance in Hong Kong. Annette is a member of the taskforce set up to implement the Report’s recommendations.
In 2012 Annette co-founded the Asia Pro Bono Conference. She continues to be at the forefront of developing pro bono infrastructure at an international level.
