From Inequality to Equality: The Importance of Pro Bono in Criminal Justice and Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare
Date: 1 December 2023
Time: 13.30 – 15.00
Session Description:
This session will explore how the continued criminalization of sexual and reproductive health care can prevent the achievement of gender equality and the crucial role of pro bono access to justice actors in the criminal justice system to advance gender equality.
Goals:
- To examine how criminal justice systems have been weaponized to deny people their fundamental rights including sexual and reproductive rights, and how this impacts gender equality.
- To discuss the ways in which pro bono access to justice actors, including lawyers, advocates, and organizations, can work towards dismantling the harmful effects of the criminalization of sexual and reproductive health care on gender equality.
- To identify strategies for engaging with the criminal justice system to ensure that people have access to justice and that their fundamental rights particularly to sexual and reproductive health care are protected.
This session will be led by experts in the field of gender equality, reproductive rights and criminal justice and will include an online game and scavenger hunt. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of the challenges faced by those seeking access to sexual and reproductive health care in the criminal justice system and how pro bono access to justice actors can play a critical role in advancing gender equality.
