Khing Maung Zaw
Senior Advocate at Independent Law Association of Myanmar
Born in Pyinmana, a town in midland Myanmar, on 15th January 1948. Parents are U Ko Ko and Daw Nyo Nyo, saw mill owners.
Studied at KEM (King Edward Memorial) Primary School and State High School No.(1) for primary education, then matriculated from St. John's Diocesan Boys' High School in Rangoon (Yangon).
Attended the Mandalay Arts and Science University (MASU) in 1965, majoring in Geology. Attended the University Correspondence Course of Rangoon (Yangon) University, majoring Law. Continued studies and got a bechalor's degree of Law (LL.B.) in 1982. Practised law and became an advocate of the Supreme Court. Participated in the Bar Association of Pyinmana (local Bar Association) and became its General Secretary and Chairman subsequently. Formed a volunteer lawyers' group called Legal Aid for Peasants (LAP) to help farmers and other poor people facing criminal charges. Currently Head of the Legal Committee of the NLD for Naypyitaw Area. Now a Central Executive Committee member of ILAM ( Independent Lawyers' Association of Myanmar).
In August 2015, initiated the " Yellow Ribbon Campaign " to oppose the military intervention in
Myanmar Judiciary. Attended the Pro Bone Conference held in Mandalay in August 2015. In September 2015, under the sponsorship of IBA-HRI , attended the UPR Info Pre-session on Myanmar held in
Geneva, Switzerland, with two other colleagues as Myanmar Delegation of Human Rights Defenders. Took part in Advanced Training on UN Human Rights Mechanisms and attended Martin Ennels Awards Ceremony also.
Also tried his hand in literary field. First tried poetry and later wrote literary and political articles. Won some literary awards. Known by the pen-name " Zaw Win Ko ". Married to Yee Yee Hla, an ex-teacher -turned- jeweller.
